AUSTIN HAS BEEN A CHANGED man since the other night. I thought he was going to run as fast as he could when I told him to change his schedule, but he proved me wrong by sitting down to hear me out. Now, there’s an eerie sense of calm about him, as though he has decided that he will no longer fight for all the ways our relationship could potentially fail. That should allow me to breathe easier at night, but in reality, it has left me waiting for an outburst that will make the one about school seem like little more than a polite conversation.
“I think that’s everything,” Chad declares, pulling down the rolling door on the moving truck. It didn’t take long to move everything from the storage unit to the house because most of my furniture was left behind in Mississippi. I couldn’t justify the expense of moving second-hand furniture to move into a brand new house. While it goes totally against every frugal bone in my body, this is my castle, the home I’ve dreamed of owning my entire life, and I want to have belongings that no one else has previously owned for the first time in my life. I want this to feel like home when I walk through the doors.
“Thanks,” I say, leaning against the side of the truck, taking a look at the front of the house with warm light glowing in every window for the first time. Austin appears in one of the two living room windows, waving for us to come inside, which means he and Becky have dinner ready. “You’ve helped more than you’ll know,” I add, nodding to where Austin is still watching the two of us.
“Oh, I think I know and don’t you think I won’t call in a favor or two down the line.” Chad laughs. The sound quickly dies and Chad starts shifting from one foot to the other uncomfortably. He wrings the back of his neck, as if he wants to say something but doesn’t know if that is a wise decision.
“Spit it out, already,” I urge.
“Look, I know things are going good for you and the kid, so I’m only going to ask this once and then I’ll let it drop.” Becky opens the front door, hollering for us to get inside or go hungry, so we start walking over the cobblestone path to the house. “Are you sure you know what you’re doing? I’m not going to insult you by saying I think you’re trying to rescue the kid because I can tell you’re head over heels in love, but what happens when he turns twenty-one and wants to go to the bars and you have to sit home grading papers late into the night?”
I bristle at the way Chad keeps referring to Austin as ‘the kid’. I’ve learned that’s a touchy subject for Austin and don’t want my friend accidentally offending him in our home. And yes, I consider this to be our home despite the fact that only my name is on the deed.
